Tech notesCongratulations! You have just found the most innovative and unique helicopter set up tool available! This tool will allow you to accurately set engine alignment, tail rotor gear box alignment,
check and set swashplate alignment, check and correct control interaction and eliminates
the need for a head lock when checking and setting main rotor blade pitch.
Setting engine alignment:
Place Ultimate Heli setup tool on top of main gear and level heli as necessary. Next, place
Ultimate Heli setup tool on top of engine cooling fan and adjust engine fore and aft as
necessary. For best alignment, repeat for lateral (side to side) adjustment. Note: not all helis
will allow this adjustment without some engine mount and/or engine modification
Tailrotor gearbox:Place Ultimate Heli setup tool on upper main bearing block, top of rotor head, top of main
shaft or anyplace known to be perpendicular (90 deg.) to the main shaft. This would also
include frame cross members and in some cases, even the gryo mounting pad. With
alignment tool installed as described above level heli as necessary. Remove tailrotor hub from tailrotor output shaft. Secure Ultimate Heli setup tool to tail rotor
output shaft . Align tailrotor gear box as necessary to achieve level as
indicated on level aligned with output shaft.
Swashplate alignment:
Place Ultimate Heli setup tool on upper main bearing block, top of rotor head, top of main
shaft or anyplace known to be perpendicular (90 deg.) to the main shaft. This would also
include frame cross members and, in some cases, even the gryo mounting pad.
Turn on radio and set collective to mid stick, 0 deg. for 3D or approximately 4 deg. for
beginner and contest. Align flybar with tailboom and attach Ultimate Heli setup tool on flybar near rotor hub as
indicated in pic#4 and level flybar with Ultimate Heli setup tool attached so that bubble level
that is 90 deg. to flybar is level. Carefully rotate rotorhead 180 deg, again aligning flybar with
tailboom and note amount of movement or change in bubble movement. Note: change in
bubble movement represents total change in swashplate trim. Move battery pack to change
fore/aft CG or correct with mechanical adjustment (pushrod and ballllinks) to swashplate.
Only correct to ˝ of bubble movement for perfect trim.
Checking for collective to cyclic interaction:Place Ultimate Heli setup tool on upper main bearing block, top of rotor head, top of main
shaft or anyplace known to be perpendicular (90 deg.) to the main shaft. This would also
include frame cross members and in some cases, even the gryo mounting pad.
Turn on radio and set collective to mid stick, 0 deg. For 3D or approximately 4 deg. for
beginner and contest. Align flybar with tailboom and attach Ultimate Heli setup tool on flybar near rotor hub and level Ultimate Heli setup tool so that bubble level that is 90 deg. to flybar is level. Move collective stick from ˝ stick to full collective and observe bubble level movement.
Program a mixer in transmitter and correct so bubble does not move. Return collective stick
to ˝ stick and repeat for ˝ stick to lower collective settings. Rotate rotor head so that main blades align with tail boom and repeat above.
Using alignment tool in place of flybar lock:It is very important when checking/setting main rotor pitch that the flybar be at 0 deg. of tilt.
This is even more important with rotorheads utilizing high flybar ratios. Place Ultimate Heli setup tool on upper main bearing block, top of rotor head, top of main
shaft or anyplace known to be perpendicular (90 deg.) to the main shaft. This would also
include frame cross members and in some cases, even the gryo mounting pad.
Align flybar with tailboom and attach Ultimate Heli setup tool on flybar near rotor hub and level Ultimate Heli setup tool so that bubble level that is parallel to
flybar is level. Set pitch gage to desired pitch setting and level flybar as indicated by bubble level that is
parallel with flybar. Adjust main rotor pitch as necessary. |
